The Most Typical Door Problems Revealed and How To Fix Them

For the period of common use, the door and its frame may encounter different problems. So do not panic if you have some doors at home that are not properly working. This article will discuss some common door problems and will provide solutions on how they will be fixed.

Binding door

If the pivot of the door contacts with the frame before it is fully closed, it is because the pivot has been sunk far away into the frame. The door is said to be pivot bound. It may also turn out to be hinge bound if the screws are out of their place and it will stop the pivot to be fully closed.

This kind of problem can be solved by filling out the defective hinge. You can use sandpaper, card board or hard board, and card or by driving the screw tightly. The screws that are smaller than its original screw can also be the best key in solving these problems. Put in the space filler under the hinges or replace the protruding screws in order to cure a defective hinge-bound door.

Sticking door

Occasionally a door may stick when it comes into contact with the frame through too much paint on the door and frame or, in the case of external doors, because the wood has swollen. Because of too much paint, a door may swell and sticking will likely to happen. Thus when a swollen door contacts its frame, it will stick on it. This is very common to external doors.

The easiest and effective solution is to scrape off an enough amount of wood so that the door can be freely closed. It would be easier to take the wood off the door rather than taking it off from the frame. The door needs to be removed when scraping in order to get at the top and at the bottom. Make sure not to overdo scraping to avoid large space when the door dries out. If you notice that the door is touching the floor because of high spots, put sandpapers on uneven places and pass the door on these sandpapers.

Sagging door

Hinges that are strained and pulled out from the frames or from the edges of the door cause door to hang down. Hinges are frequently loosened when a door is hinge bound. To protect the hinges, you can use longer or thicker screws to accommodate them and insert a dowel into the holes before putting the screws back in. Strained hinges is caused by using hinges that are not big enough. A pair of small hinges can hold an internal door but you may need three bug hinges for external doors.

Poor bracing

Braces add strength to doors. Bracing can be done vertically or horizontally. Framed boarded doors need to be properly braced to avoid sagging. Framed and ledged doors will be very durable with adequate bracing. The braces hold up the non-hinged side of the door
